Acarophenax lacunatus (predator) (Cross & Krantz, 1964)
This mite is widely distributed and lives phoretically on stored-product beetles like Rhyzopertha dominica or Tribolium castaneum. It parasitises the eggs of these beetles and is regarded as a beneficial biological control agent, suppressing the population of the pest beetles (e.g. see Oliveira et al., 2003).
Females feed on the eggs of their hosts and their offspring develops inside the body of the female. During this development, the abdomen of the female enlarges (physogastrism), and the progeny matures (and young females become inseminated) inside the body of the female. One generation can be completed in as littles as 2-5 days (de Oliveira et al., 2007).
