Aparavirus vallesi (entomopathogen)
Assigned virus:
• Solenopsis invicta virus 1 (SINV1)
The Solenopsis invicta virus 1 is a positive, single-stranded RNA virus which infects the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta in Argentina and North America. The virus particles are spherical with a diameter of 30-35 nm. S. invicta is an introduced species in North America and the virus was likely naturally carried by the ant during this introduction. The virus is associated with larval mortality in laboratory colonies. In field populations, it persists as a chronic, asymptomatic infection. Under stress conditions, the virus can cause overt symptoms and even death. The virus is transmitted by contact between the workers and also by the queen through the eggs to the next generation.
