The genus contains more than 100 species which are typically generalist scavengers, feeding, for example, on dried plant material or dead insects. Several species are important storage pests and attack stored grains, museum collection, food stores and other products. There are also reports of the larval exuvia causing allergies.
Some species like the khapra beetle are important quarantine pests in North America. Identification is based on characters like the structure of the antennae and pronotum, as well as the colour of the elytra.
