Toxic activity of Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis against Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz and Neiva, 1912) larvae (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae)
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia 44 (1-2), 51-55
Abstract: The lethal concentration of the entomopathogenic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis a strain isolated from Brazilian soil and pathogenic to Culicidae and Simuliidae was studied against third instar larvae of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz and Neiva, 1912) the vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis and the symptoms and signs presented. The LC50 an LC90 were 5.7 and 96.17 mg/g. The most clearly observed symptom was a delayed life cycle. The majority of the dead larvae had a dusty body, sometimes with dark regions. Chains of vegetative cells of B. thuringiensis were detected in slide preparations of smears from dead larvae, suggesting bacterial multiplication inside larval bodies.
