Limonius californicus (Mannerheim, 1843) - (sugarbeet wireworm)
This click beetle is an important pest of sugarbeet, wheat or other small grains, potato as well as other crops in western North America. The damage is done by the larvae boring into and feeding on the roots. Sugarbeet and cereals are most likely to be attacked, e.g. in beet fields which were previously used as grassland. Severe infestations can kill the plants. The development is rather long and the larval stage can last 4 or more years. The adult beetles are around 10 mm long.
