Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée, 1854 - (eggplant fruit and shoot borer)
This moth is an important pest of eggplants in tropical and subtropical parts of Asia, from Pakistan and India in the west to Japan in the east. The insect has been also recorded from Saudi Ariabia and northern parts of Australia. It is of quarantine concern in other regions like Europe (EFSA Panel on Plant Health, 2021).
The larvae bore into the shoots and midribs, causing wilting, and into developing fruits, causing damaged, distorted and unmarketable fruits. Yield losses can exceed 50%. Control involves mainly the repeated use of pesticides. Occasionally, it is also reported as a pest of potato and tomato.
The mature larvae leave the plant and pupate on/in the soil. Under suitable conditions, there can be up to 10 generations per year. The larvae are pink to red. The adult moths are mainly whitish with a central brown mark and a body length of around 12-15 mm. Males are slightly smaller (wingspan ~ 20 mm) compared to females (wingspan ~ 23 mm).
