Leptomastidea abnormis (parasitoid) (Girault, 1915)

This wasp is a solitary endoparasitoid of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri and some other mealybugs. It is believed to be native to the Mediterranean region. However, it has spread with its host or through classical biological control programs to other regions. It is now found for example in many parts of the Americas.

L. abnormis prefers to oviposit in 2nd instar mealybugs and the whole life cycle lasts only 2-3 weeks under suitable conditions. It is commercially produced and used mainly against the citrus mealybug in greenhouses. The adult wasp is between 0.75 and 1.5 mm long with characteristically striped wings.
