Feltiella acarisuga (predator) (Vallot, 1827)
This midge is an efficient bio-control agent against spider mites in greenhouses and is available commercially. It is used particularly on tomatoes, where other natural enemies do not work. Female midges lay eggs on leaves, close to spider mite colonies. One female produces about 30 eggs during its life.
The emerging larvae feed on the mites and can complete their development within about one week. If insufficient prey is available, pupae with a reduced size may be formed. The pupating larvae construct a cocoon and the new adults emerge after a duration of a week.
