Erigeron (weeds) L. - (horseweeds, fleabanes)
This genus contains several hundred species of herbaceous, composite plants. Some are grown as ornamentals, but several others are regarded as important agricultural and environmental weeds. These include, for example, Canadian horseweed, Erigeron canadensis, and hairy fleabane, Erigeron bonariensis. They are often found in disturbed habitats and in various soil types. Several important weed species have been and often still are listed under the genus Conyza by weed scientists, but have been transferred to the genus Erigeron by botanists.
The leaves are usually lanceolate, alternate and simple. The ray flowers are small, arranged in inflorescences, white to purplish. The plants produce a large number of wind dispersed seeds (up to 200 000 per plant). These float very well and can be carried over distances of many kilometers.
