Conophthorus coniperda (Schwarz, 1895) - (white pine cone beetle)

This cone beetle is found in north-eastern parts of North America, where it is a serious pest of white pine seed orchards. Mainly cones of the eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) are attacked. Like for other Conophthorus species, females enter the base of developing cones, tunnel through them, attract a male and lay eggs. The larvae feed of the cones including the seeds which wither and fall off. The adults overwinter in the fallen cones and emerge the following spring.
