Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller, 1848) - (lesser cornstalk borer)
The moth is found in the Americas. The caterpillars damage the stems of maize, sugarcane, groundnuts and other crops, weakening or killing the plants. The adult female lays its eggs at or just below the soil level near the base of the attacked plant. The hatching larvae feed on the stem and construct silken tunnels for protection. The insect overwinters in the soil as mature larva or pupa. The young adults emerge in spring.
