Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead, 1906 - (mango scale)

This scale is native to Asia and an introduced pest of mango trees in Australia, Africa, tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, as well as in southern Europe. Initial records and reports of first occurrence of the scale in the affected countries date mostly to the 1990s and 2000s.

The leaves and fruits are attacked. In young trees and nursery plants, infested leaves can become necrotic. During heavy infestations, the leaves drop off and twigs might die. Damage to the fruits can be even more significant because lesions and pink spots develop on the surface, making the fruits unmarketable (e.g. Juárez-Hernández et al., 2014). Yield losses can exceed 40% (del Pino et al., 2021).
