Aphelenchoides Fischer 1894 - (foliar nematodes)
This genus contains around 100 species of nematodes. Many feed on fungi, however, a number are plant parasitic and associated with aboveground plant parts like buds, young leaves and developing seeds. These feed ectoparasitically and endoparasitically and several species are economically important. For example, the white tip nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi causes a serious disease of rice in tropical and subtropical regions.
During off-seasons, the nematodes can survive for several years in dry plant materials or seeds. The mature nematodes are 0.5 to 1.2 mm long. The genus is characterized by a combination of different morphological characters like a large median bulb (metacorpus) or a slender stylet with small, distinct knobs.
