Odoiporus longicollis (Olivier, 1807) - (banana pseudostem weevil)

The weevil is found in southern parts of Asia, from India to southern China and to Papua New Guinea in the south. It breeds in the pseudostems of banana plants, weakening the stem. As a result, the production of flowers and fruits is interrupted, or small fruits are formed. In infested banana plantations, up to 20% plants may be attacked and have stopped producing fruits.

Females cut an opening into the surface of the pseudostem, insert their ovipositor into it, and lay an egg inside. The emerging larva tunnels through the pseudostem, the tightly packed leaf sheaths of the banana plant. Development from egg to adult lasts around 6 weeks. The adult weevil lives for up to half a year. It is around 12-15 mm long and brown when emerging from the pupa, turning gradually black.
