Orthosia Ochsenheimer, 1816

This genus of nuctuid moths contains more than 50 species that are found in temperate parts of Europe, Asia and North America. Several species are regarded as pests and feed on various trees. E.g. the speckled green fruit worm, Orthosia hibisci, attacks apple trees in Canada. However, none of the species appears to be causing serious damage.

The moths are often brownish or grey, sometimes with darker marks. The caterpillars are greenish, yellowish or dark grey.
