Oecophylla smaragdina (predator) (Fabricius) - (green tree ant)
The ant is found in tropical parts of Asia and Australia. It lives in trees and is considered a useful predator of pests of tree crops like citrus, mango or coconut palms, preying on various types of insects. However, it may also protect mealybug colonies. The larvae and pupae are used as food in some countries. The ant forms large colonies which may include several host trees and multiple nests. Nests (see illustration below) are constructed by tying leaves together.
