Hirschmanniella oryzae (van Breda de Haan, 1902) - (rice root nematode)
The nematode is wide-spread in rice-growing regions and attacks the roots of rice and other cereals. It is common in paddy rice and can be found in irrigation water and the soil. The nematodes penetrate the rice roots and cause necrosis and decay. Heavily infested plants show above-ground symptoms like stunting and up to 60% reduced tillering.
The females are 1.2 to 1.6 mm long and have a stout stylet with well rounded basal knobs. The vulva is located posterior to the middle of the body. The males have well developed stylets.
