Sciaridae - (fungus gnats)
The family of fungus gnats contains around 1,800 species of small flies. The adults are short lived and the larvae are normally found in the soil where they feed on fungi, plant roots and various organic matter.
Several species are pests of commercial mushroom cultures. Others breed in the growing media of green houses or nurseries. They can cause serious damage to roots and transmit plant diseases or they can become nuisance pests when they reach high densities.
The adults are 1-7 mm long and have a characteristic wing venation. The wings are often dark (in Greek skiaros = dark).
