Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) - (southern armyworm)
The species is a polyphagous pest which attacks crops like soybean, sweet potato or tomato. Outbreaks and defoliation of crops have been observed. The species is found in tropical and subtropical parts of America.
Development from egg to adult lasts 4-6 weeks, involving 6 larval instars. Pupation takes place in the soil at a depth of 5-10 cm. There are around 4 generations per year. For management foliar insecticides are used.

The larvae are green, grey or black in colour with several longitudinal white or yellow stripes. The adults have a wingspan of around 3.5 cm. The forewings are gray to brown with irregular marks.
