Spodoptera ornithogalli (Guenée, 1852) - (yellowstriped armyworm)
is found in eastern parts of North America and also in Central and South America. The caterpillars are gregarious and polyphagous. They often defoliate the plants and also feed on the fruits (e.g. tomatoes, cotton).
The development from egg, through 6 larval stages, to mature adult lasts around 6 weeks and there are 3-4 generations per year. It overwinters as pupa in the ground. It is recommended to target the young larval stages during control operations. Natural enemies are important and may be affected by insecticides.

The adult has a wingspan of 35-40 mm. The forewings are dark grey-brown with many lighter streaks and marks. The caterpillar is gray to black with a yellow-orange stripe along each side. Below these stripes are less distinct additional stripes.
