Beneficials
This section includes all natural enemies and organisms relevant to biological control, like predators, parasitoids, antagonists of plant diseases, natural enemies of weeds and diseases of pests.
The different groups are listed in the box on the right and are briefly described below. To display lists of families, genera and species click on the respective item. Of course, you always have the option of using the wiki search function.
• Parasitoids and parasites - includes both endo- and ectoparasites of pests
1. Hymenoptera parasitoids - like Braconidae or chalcid wasps
2. Diptera parasitoids - like Tachinidae or coffin flies (Phoridae)
3. Other groups - include endoparasites like Strepsiptera and ectoparasites of pests
• Predators - include arthropods, vetebrates and other groups
1. Insect predators - like beetles, predatory bugs or ants
2. Mite predators - like phytoseiid mites
3. Other predators - include groups like spiders or birds
• Diseases of pests - includes microbial diseases and endoparasitic nematodes
1. Entomopathogenic bacteria - Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt crops, symbiontic bacteria of entomopathogenic nematodes, other bacteria
2. Entomopathogenic fungi - fungal diseases of insects, e.g. Beauveria
3. Other diseases of pests - like pathogenic nematodes, microsporidia or beneficial viruses
• Antagonists - against plant diseases and plant parasitic nematodes
1. Antagonistic bacteria, e.g. Pseudomonas fluorescens
2. Antagonistic fungi, e.g. Trichoderma, competing non-pathogenic strains or fungal diseases of nematodes
3. Other antagonists - organisms like antagonistic viruses or mycophagous insects
• Weed bioagents - diseases or herbivores of weeds
1. Diseases of weeds - fungi, bacteria and viruses
2. Herbivorous insects specialized on weeds
3. Other weed bioagents - e.g. herbivorous mites, nematodes or vertebrates
For an alphabetical list of all beneficials currently in the system see our general list.
