The virus causes the high plains disease of maize, wheat, barley and oats in North America. There are also reports of this virus from other regions like South America and Australia.
+

+
On maize, diseased plants are stunted, chlorotic and develop a necrosis from the leaf tip down. Most infected plant do not produce ears or produce very small ears. On wheat, the symptoms are chlorotic spots or mosaic, up to a general chlorosis of the leaves. The virus is transmitted by the wheat curl mite (''[[Aceria tosichella]]'').

The taxonomic position of this virus has been uncertain, but it is now usually listed under the genus [[Emaravirus (genus)|Emaravirus]].
