Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) - (southern armyworm)
The species is a polyphagous pest which attacks crops like soybean, sweet potato or tomato. Outbreaks and defoliation of crops have been observed. The species is found in tropical and subtropical parts of America. Since 2016/2017, it has been reported from West and Central Africa.
Development from egg to adult lasts 4-6 weeks, involving 6 larval instars. Pupation takes place in the soil at a depth of 5-10 cm. There are around 4 generations per year. For management foliar insecticides are used.
