The genus contains more than 200 species of medium-sized to large aphids with a reddish, brownish or black colouration. Many species are confined to one or a few related host plants and several are important crop pests like Uroleucon sonchi. Some are vectors of plant viruses.
The species usually have a sexual life cycle and overwinter as eggs. Most are not attended by ants. The siphunculi are black and long. The cauda is finger shaped, long and rather pointed.
