Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) - (bean weevil)
The beetle attacks the seeds of beans in the field and in storage. Occasionally, also the seeds of peas, soya and lentils are infested. The species is believed to have originated from Central America, but now has a world-wide distribution. Dry weight losses of the seeds can exceed 50%.
Female weevils lay their eggs inside the pods in the field or on the stored seeds. There is usually one larva developing per seed which pupates inside the seed. The weevil can spread to a new field if some of the planted seeds contain larvae or pupae. With a life cycle of around 4 weeks, there are usually several generations per year.
