Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford, 1894) - (black timber bark beetle)
This species is an ambrosia beetle which feeds on symbiotic fungi, introduced by it into the infested plant. It is native to eastern and south-eastern Asia but has been introduced to North America (first record in 1932 from New York) and Europe (around 1940). It infests many species of trees and woody ornamentals, but attacks mainly stressed trees or recently felled trees. In might spread with wooden packing material.
