This bacterium is widely distributed, but is still a quarantine organism in some regions. It causes '''bacterial spot of stone fruits''' and twig canker. The hosts include plum, peach and several other ''Prunus'' species. The infection can result in early defoliation, a weakening of the trees, as well as a significant reduction of yield and the marketability of the fruits. In some cases the bacterium can be also responsible for cankers and death of the trees.

The pathogen enters the plant through small wounds or stomata. Symptoms include pitting, spotting, gumming and water-soaked tissue. Management involves the use of copper compounds and planting of resistant cultivars.
