The template takes three parameters related to the Publication form:

;|1= : The info parameter, which should contain any previous messages to be displayed in the Infobox (see [[Template:InformationBox]]) for a publication.
;|2= : The field <Is book> of the article, which may be blank.
;|3= : The field <Journal or series> of the article, which may also be blank.

If <Is book> is set to Yes, but the <Journal or series> is not blank the template expands the text for the Infobox with the message.

Usage (with example that should be a book but a journal):
 <nowiki>{{</nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}|1=|2=Yes|3=Journal or series}}
… results in:
: {{{{PAGENAME}}|1=|2=Yes|3=Journal or series}}
