This fungus is widely distributed and causes white rot on onions, garlic and other ''Allium'' species. The sclerotia can survive in the soil for more than 20 years and will germinate when their mycelia are re-activated through exudates by ''Allium'' roots. Plants typically become infected when bulb formation begins and develop a soft rot of bulbs and roots. Older leaves wilt.
