The fungus causes rots on various crops and may also be a problem in stored vegetables. Common diseases are root rot and stem rot on vegetables or soft rot on fruits. It can be also a human pathogen.

The hyphae are rarely septate and the sporangiophores are usually straight, smooth-walled, sometimes branched and 200 to 1000 μm long. The sporangia are spherical, around 60 to 200 μm in diameter. The sporangiospores are striate, brown, and subglobose with a size of around 6 x 4 µm.
