This genus of plant viruses currently includes 19 species which resemble the [[Potato leafroll virus|'''Po'''tato '''le'''af'''r'''oll '''virus''']] (PLRV). They have a world-wide distribution and can cause important diseases of crops. Apart from PLRV, viruses like [[Beet western yellows virus]] or [[Sugarcane yellow leaf virus]] result in substantial yield losses. The viruses are transmitted by aphids in a persistent manner and infect a large variety of crops, ranging from legumes to cereals to cucurbits.

The viruses have isometric particles with a diameter of 25-30 nm. The genome is monopartite consisting of positive-sense single stranded RNA with 5,600 to 6,000 nucleotides and 6 open reading frames.
