The virus causes serious diseases on tomatoes and other solanaceous hosts. It appears to have originated in South America, but it is now wide-spread, e.g. it has been recorded from Europe since the 1990s. The main symptoms on tomato are chlorosis and yellow angular leaf spots, severe leaf mosaics and occasionally leaf or stem necrosis. Spotting and marbling of the fruits is common and reduces the commercial value of the harvest.

The virus is highly infectious and easily transmitted mechanically. The incubation period is about 2-3 weeks. It persists on tools, clothes and dry plant material for several weeks. The particles are filamentous (about 510 nm long), similar to other Potexviruses.
