This genus of termites is found in Africa and southern Asia. Some species are regarded as pests. For example, ''[[Odontotermes formosanus]]'' is a subterranean termite in eastern Asia that can be a pest of crops and destroy wood products. The crops and the wood is not eaten but are used for the fungus gardens of the termites. In turn, the termites feed on the cultivated fungi.

The species of ''Odontotermes'' are characterised by the soldiers having a small tooth on the inside of the left mandible (see arrow in illustration on right). There may be a similar but smaller tooth also on the right mandible.
