This species of tick is found in Europe and temperate parts of western Asia. It has been also recorded since 2010 from north-eastern North America ([[Parasites and Vectors (2021) 14 (394) - First hemispheric report of|Tufts & Diuk-Wasser, 2021]]). The hosts include cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and humans. It has been also associated with migratory birds. ''H. punctata'' can carry and transmit a number of disease-causing agents like viruses, as well as ''Babesia'', ''Theileria'', ''Borrelia'', ''Rickettsia'' and ''Anaplasma'' species.
