This genus of small (4-7 cm) fresh-water fish is native in and around Central America and contains around 40 species. Two species, ''[[Gambusia affinis (predator)|Gambusia affinis]]'' and ''[[Gambusia holbrooki (predator)|G. holbrooki]]'', have been widely used as "mosquitofish" and have been introduced into various regions, especially at the end of the 19th century as one of the methods to combat malaria.

The mosquitofish are rather tolerant to water quality and can even thrive in brackish water and in habitats like rice field. However, the introductions have resulted in several negative effects on the environments like a reduction of the fauna of native amphibians and fish.
