This genus of land slugs contains more than 100 species and is native to temperate areas of Europe, Asia and North America. Some species have been introduced to the southern hemisphere. A number of species are important agricultural pests like ''[[Deroceras reticulatum]]''. These infest crops like cereals or vegetables.  

The species of ''Deroceras'' are small to medium sized and slender slugs, typically reaching a length of 3-4 cm. The colour is often greyish, sometimes with darker flecks or a net-like pattern. The anterior part (mantle) is comparatively large, occupying one third to one half of the whole body. The breathing pore (pneumostome) is located near the posterior end of the mantle.
