This midge is widely distributed in Europe and infests peas, rarely other Fabaceae. There are two generations per year. In spring, females lay eggs on the buds and shoots and the emerging larvae feed on the plant tissue, inducing the formation of galls. After pupation in the soil, a second generation emerges in the summer with females laying their eggs into the developing pods. A single pod may contain up to 250 larvae and large populations result in yield losses.

The 2nd generation larvae overwinter in cocoons in the soil and pupate in spring. However, emergence may be delayed for several years. Adult midges are 2-3 mm long and yellowish with black antennae. The larvae are yellow and maggot-like.
