Xestia c-nigrum (Linnaeus) - (spotted cutworm)

The moth is polyphagous and widely distributed in temperate regions. It attacks a large variety of plants including grasses, legumes, ornamentals, vegetables, berries, grapevine and fruit trees. Eggs are laid in autumn and the larvae overwinter, feeding mainly in the spring. They damage leaves and also cut plants at ground level.

The adults have a wingspan of 3.5 to 4.5 cm. The forewings are reddish brown with black marks towards the base resembling the Hebrew letter nun. The fully grown caterpillars are reddish brown to grey.
