Amphimallon majale (Razoumowsky, 1789) - (European chafer)
This cockchafer-like beetle is native to Europe and has been recorded in North America since 1940, where it has become a pest of turf. Damage to cereals and other crops has been also recorded (Renkema et al., 2015). A. majale has expanded its distribution range from the State of New York to other north-eastern states and to parts of eastern Canada. The larvae (white grubs) feed on roots causing most of the damage. Adult feeding on the foliage is mostly negligible. Damage to turf can be extensive enough to require pesticide treatment (Nyrop et al., 1995).
