Gammabaculovirus neabietis (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
Neodiprion abietis nucleopolyhedrovirus (NeabNPV)

The Neodiprion abietis nucleopolyhedrovirus is an important natural biological control agent of the balsam fir sawfly, Neodiprion abietis, which causes periodic outbreaks in eastern Canada. It can cause epizootics, leading to the collapse of sawfly outbreaks. In addition, aerial application of the virus can successfully suppress sawfly populations (see illustration at right).
