Mastotermes darwiniensis Froggatt - (giant northern termite)
This species is an important subterranean termite attacking crops, living trees and wood products in northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. The size of a colony can surpass 1 million individuals. Queens lay "pods" containing around 20 eggs. The casts include nymphs or workers, soldiers, a queen and a king. The nymphs can live as workers or develop into soldiers and, alternatively, into winged reproductives.
