Episyrphus balteatus (predator) (De Geer, 1776)
This species of hoverfly is common in Europe and Asia. The larvae are predators of aphids and the species is being commercially produced. One larva can consume more than 50 aphids per days. The pupae have a pear-shaped body.
The adults are about 10 mm long and feed on pollen, nectar and honeydew. The thorax is dark with lighter, longitudinal stripes. The yellow, wasp-like abdomen bears black marks resembling mustaches. The adults migrate south in the winter. The life cycle from egg, through 3 larval stages, to mature adult lasts about 1 month.
