Delia coarctata (Fallen, 1825) - (wheat bulb fly)
This fly is found in Europe and temperate parts of Asia and North America. It infests wheat, several other cereals and some grasses. Females lay eggs on the ground which go through a diapause before hatching in spring. The larva bores into the base of a stem of a young host plant, causing yellowing and "dead hearts". Yield losses can reach several tons per hectare. See Rogers et al. (2015) for these and other aspects.
There is one generation per year and adults are found throughout the summer. Females are 6-7 mm long, light grey with black tarsi. Males are darker.
