Amblyseius swirskii (predator) Athias-Henriot, 1962
This predatory mite is native to the Mediterranean region, but is used as a biological control agent in many countries. It is polyphagous, feeding on various small insects. For example, it is very effective against whiteflies and thrips pests in greenhouses. Due to its fast reproduction, it is a popular bioagent for Bemisia tabaci, a key pest in many greenhouses. One generation lasts around 3 weeks.
A. swirskii is commercially produced in several countries. Among the release methods being used are slow-release sachets which are small breeding units that produce the predators over a period of several weeks.
