type species of the genus Spiroplasma (Spiroplasmataceae, Mollicutes); in many citrus growing areas; produces small, mottled or discoloured leaves, stunting and numerous dead branches on the infected trees; transmitted through grafting and the beet leafhopper, Circulifer tenellus.
