Wiseana NPV (entomopathogens)

This is a group of closely related viruses that infect larvae in the moth genus Wiseana. The group includes, for example, the Wiseana signata SNPV (WisiSNPV). The viruses are endemic in New Zealand, as are their hosts, and play an important role in suppressing Wiseana populations. In areas where the viruses are not present very severe pest problems can develop in pastures. This situation can occur for example if the natural spread of the viruses is interrupted by certain agricultural practices like hay production or cultivation.

For a summary of these viruses see Kalmakoff and Crawford (1982).
