Varroa destructor virus 1 (VDV 1)
This virus belongs to the family Iflaviridae and the genus Iflavirus. It infects and multiplies in honeybees as well as in the honeybee parasite Varroa destructor. It has been first described from the Netherlands (Ongus et al., 2004), but has apparently spread to North America. There, only 2 out of 75 colonies were found infected with the virus in 2010. However, the incidence increased to more than half of the apiaries containing the virus in 2016 (Ryabov et al., 2017). It has been also reported from other regions like eastern Africa (Ongus et al., 2018). In Europe, the virus has been associated with overwintering colony losses of honey bees.
