Sporisorium cruentum (J.G. Kühn) Vánky 1985 - (loose smut of sorghum)

This fungus is widely distributed and causes loose smut on sorghum. Apart from grain sorghum, it can also infect the panicles of weedy Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense). The infected plants are stunted with thin stalks, and heads emerging earlier than those of healthy plants.
