This family of springtails contains around 250 species. Most species feed on decaying plant matter, fungal spores or algae. Some are agricultural pests like the lucerne flea, Sminthurus viridis, an invasive species in some regions (e.g. Australia).
The species of Sminthuridae are normally less than 3 mm long and have a spherical body without clear distinction between thorax and abdomen. They are also called "globular springtails". The antennae are longer than the head.
