Ramulariopsis gossypii (Speg. 1886) U. Braun 1993 - (false mildew of cotton)

This fungus is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and causes a leaf blight and leaf spot disease on cotton. Infections start with angular necrotic lesions which later coalesce, causing premature leaf drop, defoliation and premature opening of the bolls. Yield losses can reach 50% in susceptible cultivars.
